RICHARD CHICKEN 1799-1866

the model for

WILKINS MICAWBER

RICHARD CHICKEN was born in York on the 6th August 1799.

Richard was initially an actor, and then a clerk at various establishments. He seems to have been quite well known in York. From approximately 1845 onwards, Richard worked alongside Alfred Dickens, brother of Charles Dickens. During this time, Charles Dickens was writing David Copperfield, and frequently visited his brother Alfred in York. It is quite possible that Richard Chicken and Charles Dickens met. Richard is believed to be the model for Wilkins Micawber in David Copperfield.

Richard Chicken was the husband of Louisa Alexander and the father of twelve children.

He was also my great-great-grandfather.

In these pages, I have tried to bring together as much knowledge as there is about Richard. I shall continue to do more research on him so further information will be added from time to time. If you would like to be advised of any changes / additions, please contact me at sandramidgley1@gmail.com.
